What Are the Benefits of Replacing Your Roof in Summer? What Are the Benefits of Replacing Your Roof in Summer?

Your roof does a great job of protecting you from the rain, wind and cold — but that means it takes a battering. A roof that’s been expertly installed with good-quality materials will last a long time, with only minor repairs needed, but not indefinitely.

Having your roof replaced can be daunting. It’s not only a major job, which can disrupt your life while it’s ongoing, but it can also leave your home temporarily undefended. However, these problems can be reduced if you replace your roof in summer.

Why Replace Your Roof?

However good a roof might be, sooner or later it will get to the point where so many repairs are required that it’s cheaper to replace it than to fix all the individual issues. These could be broken or missing tiles or slates, tears in the felt, or damage to the flashing around chimney stacks or other structures.

Quite apart from ensuring that your roof provides top-class protection, a damaged roof will be energy inefficient, piling extra costs on your bills. In addition, an old, shabby roof is likely to reduce your property’s kerb appeal, while replacing it will immediately make your home look more attractive.

Why Replace Your Roof in Summer?

Unless we have a very bad summer, you’re not likely to notice the need for replacing your roof over the warmer months. No cold winds will be whipping through the holes, and hopefully, there won’t be much rain coming in, either.

However, this is the perfect time for a replacement. You won’t be getting cold or rained on between the old roof being removed and the new one installed, and the materials are less likely to become wet, either. If tiles are waterlogged when they’re fitted, they’re less likely to do a good job in the long run.

Hotter weather can also benefit the materials. This particularly applies to the adhesives and sealants, which bond more effectively in the warmth and provide a secure fit for your new roof.

There are also practical advantages of the work being done in summer. Besides less risk of delays due to extreme weather, any delays that do occur can be more easily made up by the roofers working for longer during extended hours of daylight.

Preparing Your Roof for Winter

Many people don’t think about the need to replace their roofs until obvious issues begin showing at the start of winter. This means that the damage might already have been done, such as water getting into the roofspace and working down, rotting timbers and causing mould and mildew. You can avoid this if your new roof is already in place.

This reactive approach means that roofers may well be fully booked during the late autumn/early winter period, so you might have to endure leaks and cold until spring. It’s much more likely, on the other hand, that your roofer will be able to fit you in over the summer.

Your roof needs to be sound to do its job, and any repairs or replacement are best done over the next few months, during summer. Give Empire a call to find out how we can supply you with a new roof before winter sets in.
